The unique exhibit – warrior interment of the Bronze Age was exhibited at NEFU Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography

The unique discovery of federal university archaeologists was exhibited at NEFU Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography. Warrior interment of the Bronze Age was found in Churapcha region in 2004. Ten years later, the exhibit was put on display at the museum after studying and history restoration of that period.

Chief museum curator Eduard Zhirkov says about the exhibit: “Warrior lived 4000 years ago. He was a strong, muscular man, we believe, the leader. Preservation of the interment is unique. Skeleton of the warrior was covered with a shield, consisting of one hundred elk bones. Armor was made of elk antlers. We found traces of arrowheads in the shield: signs of a struggle. His bag with things, arrowheads, scrapers, black shale adze and harpoon for fish were perfectly preserved. Perhaps he was also a hunter, walked near the Lena and Aldan, Amga - and there he needed a harpoon. Interestingly, the warrior was buried with bones of another person - perhaps the enemy that he killed”.

NEFU archaeologists that participated in the expedition, note: this is not only a unique discovery for the history, but also a major event for each of them: such discoveries in the life of an archaeologist happen infrequently.

Lilia Alekseyeva, Director of the Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography said that much has been done to study the archaeological discovery in 10 years: “Such burials contain huge amount of information, which can be hardly studied. Scientists have made radiocarbon dating, documentation of discoveries, prepared research articles”. According to the museum staff, exhibition of one exhibit was difficult to arrange, but they were able to prepare a complete information about the discovery, including exhibited photos from the expedition, showing the process of excavation.

Exhibition of one exhibit at NEFU Museum of Archaeology and Ethnography will work until May 16, 2014. The museum is open on weekdays from 10:00 to 17:00, Saturday from 11:00 to 16:00. Closed on Sunday.
