Scientists have set up a memorial stone on the place of Berezovsky mammoth discovery

International paleontological expedition, organized by NEFU with the assistance of the Russian Geographical Society, explores mammoth burial in Mayak of the Kolyma River. During the research, they excavated melted remains of adult mammoth, soft tissues, which will be delivered to NEFU Mammoth Museum.

Eleven Russian and foreign scientists participate in the expedition. During the expedition, the team visited the place where the first in the world the corpse of a mammoth was found in 1900, which was later named "Berezovsky" - the place of discovery on the bank of the Berezovka River.

"Currently, the river channel of Beryozovka changed the direction and location of the discovery was found in the thick forest with purple willow growth. Despite this, local guides quite exactly pointed out the place of discovery, which coincided with the orography on the photos that ​​the expedition of O.Gertsa made in 1901, said Mikhail Cheprasov, the Head of the expedition team of NEFU IAEN. - There is a memorial plaque near this place, which states that the expedition of the Russian Academy of Sciences excavated and shipped away a mammoth corpse in 1901".

The scientific leader is Grigory Savvinov, the Director of NEFU IAEN. Director of the Zoological Museum of Russian Academy of Sciences, Scientific Secretary of the Mammoth Committee of RAS Aleksey Tikhonov, Director of the Museum of Paleontology of the University of Michigan D. Fisher, researcher of the Institute of Zoology of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova Theodor Obade participate in the expedition.
