How living organisms survive in harsh conditions? Scientists of Yakutia and Germany for the answers to this.

Team of scientists of North -Eastern Federal University and Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research did a research study of Omoloy river. From July 7 to July 28, a Russian-German research expedition "Omoloy 2014" conducted.

Such international field expeditions conducted from 2003. This year 11 scientists from Yakutia and Germany took part in expedition. According to members of the expedition were collected unique materials: in field conditions were determined chemical composition and parameters of lake water, each lake was drilled and selected short sediment cores for subsequent complex analyzes.

"We aim to contribute to the understanding of the functioning of the Arctic Climate System and restore the natural conditions of the Late Glacial and Holocene. It is well known that the pristine nature of the Arctic preserve the unique of periglacial conditions of the past. Therefore, scientists have always wondered how in such harsh conditions living organisms inhabited and survive, "- said the chief researcher of the Department of Ecology, Institute of Natural Sciences of NEFU Lyudmila Pestryakova.

Member of the expedition, a graduate student of the Department of Phytology, Institute of Natural Sciences Aleksey Kolmogorov said that collected materials during the expedition will serve as the basis for the thesis work. "In such a joint Russian-German expeditions I participate for the fifth time. Participation in international expeditions enables expand an area of research and the collection of material, you can find new friends here, learn to work in team and improve your foreign language. My PhD thesis is devoted to dendrochronological studies of the northern territories. During these expeditions I collected wood cores which are factual material for my thesis, "- stressed Alexey Kolmogorov.

Scientists plan to publish the results that they received in Scopus and Web of Science journals.

We inform you that in spring 2015 expedition in Viluy region on lakes Satagay and Sordonnookh and summer international expedition on Lake Big Toko are planned.
