Russian-Japanese climate research. NEFU scientists were named visiting professors of Hokkaido University

The political situation in the world will not affect the scientific relations between Russia and Japan - the parties plan to strengthen the work in the field of climate research, according to NEFU Professor Trofim Maksimov and Sadayuki Tsushiya, Deputy Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan.

The government of Japan is currently developing a long-term plan to increase the financial allocations for research conducted in Russia and India, reported at the meeting. Interdisciplinary research in the field of climate change, ecology, sociology and economics will be carried out.

"Russian-Japanese research has been conducting for 23 years. In Eastern Siberia, seven constantly operating research stations actively function with the financial support of the government of Japan and the European Union: "Spasskaya Pad", "Elgeeyi", "Chokurdakh", "Kodak", "PGO Tiksi", "Island Samoilovsky" and "Chersky" became world famous research centers in the North-East of Russia. The result of long-term research was the creation of an exclusive database of the global monitoring for verified assess of the role of permafrost ecosystems in a changing climate, as well as to mitigate the effects of climate change", leading researcher of NEFU BEST Center of the Institute of Natural Sciences Aleksandr Kononov said.

Dr.Sci.Biol. Anatoly Nikolaev and Trofim Maksimov - researchers at the International Research and Education Center BEST were named visiting professors of the University of Hokkaido.

This year, the Government of Japan supported Re-Inventing Japan Project, the new scientific and educational project in masters for 2014-2018 years. Annually, 25 students from the University of Hokkaido will come to Russia on academic exchange within the master's programs. The educational project involves five universities of the Far East of Russia.

"The plans of the scientists of the two countries - the creation of an international research center for the boreal and arctic ecosystems. The center will be responsible for the planning, management, coordination and financial support for scientific research, the maintenance and support of research stations and laboratories", Aleksandr Kononov said.

The works were conducted under the auspices of three Japanese scientific organizations - Hokkaido University, the Institute of Forest and Forest Products (Sapporo), the National Institute for Environmental Studies (Tsukuba) and the Institute of Biological Problems of Cryolithozone SB RAS and Permafrost Institute SB RAS.
