NEFU UNESCO Chair welcome guests

Preparations for the International Scientific and Practical Conference "Social and Human Adaptation of the Arctic Regions to Climate Change and Globalization", which reflects one of the main activities of UNESCO and will be held at NEFU on November 25 and 26.

Within a week, meetings of organizing committee headed by NEFU Pro-rector Mikhail Prisyazhny, who heads Council of NEFU International UNESCO Chair, are held. This Chair was created on the base of Agreement between UNESCO and North-Eastern Federal University of June 09, 2011.

On Monday and Tuesday, the practical issues of organization were discussed within the frameworks of the conference “Model of the Arctic Council”. Organizers from NEFU students Trofimov Ivan and Vasilieva Nurguyana provided information and made offers. Experts arriving at the conference and participants from Russia and foreign countries will give lectures and participate in the discussion of the students reports and summarizing the results of the business game.

On Wednesday, November 19, the participants discussed issues of interaction. According to the head of NEFU UNESCO Chair Anatoly Sleptsov, report of the Chair for the period of its existence will be presented to the participants.

On Thursday, November 20, the heads of conference sections and subsections V. V. Velichenko, U. A. Vinokurova, O. D. Romanova, A. V. Zhozhikov, N. V. Savvina, S. Gadal, A. A. Nikolaeva, N. N. Osipova and others provided information on the received applications. The total number of applications reached 200, including France, the USA, Japan, Norway, Canada, Uzbekistan and other countries. Participation of representatives of the following cities of the Russian Federation is most noticeable: Arkhangelsk, Volgograd, Kurgan, Moscow, St. Petersburg, Tiksi, Tomsk, Yakutsk and others.

The organizations, whose researchers presented their reports, are the Arctic State Institute of Culture and Arts, Ob and Urgian Institute of Applied Studies and Research, the Russian State University of A. I. Herzen, Tomsk State University, the Institute of Biological Problems of Cryolithozone, the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the Institute of Humanitarian Research and Indigenous Peoples of the North SB RAS, the Institute of Mining of the North SB RAS, the Institute of Oil and Gas Problems SB RAS, Yakutsk State Agricultural Academy, Saint Petersburg State University, Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University, Tiksi Branch of YMHMS, the Institute of Ethnic Schools of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia), the Research Institute of Arctic Medicine, Yakutsk College of Music, the Department for peoples of Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and others.

Since November 21, the most geographically remote participants begun to arrive. In particular, one of the first who arrived was director of Alaska University Library (Fairbanks, USA) Bella Gerlik.

It is important that in parallel with conference on the base of NEFU Institute of Finances and Economics (the director – Aleksandr Kugaevsky), the international scientific seminar "Tourism Development in the North" which is organized within the thematic network "Local and Regional Development in the North" (the head – Oksana Romanova) of the University of the Arctic will take place.
