Dear professors, teachers, staff, PhD students and students! I congratulate you on the Day of Russian Science!

North-Eastern Federal University develops fundamental scientific research as the basis for the formation of new knowledge, the development of new technologies, establishment and development of scientific schools, small innovative enterprises, training of skilled specialists and academic personnel based on the results of recent scientific and technical progress.

The University conducts research on 13 major areas. NEFU scientists explore ecosystem of permafrost zone, permafrost, living conditions, the environment of the Arctic and the North, study the cells of mammoth, fossil animals and others.

In 2016, our researchers presented 37 projects to participate in the second Yakut Complex Expedition, initiated by the Head of the republic. This year we will start the project, we will begin work on complete overview of eco-geographical, limnological, resource and economic condition of lakes in Yakutia, will assess the condition of flora and fauna, and will carry out bioindication of Arctic regions.

One of the achievements in the field of science is the project of the Department of Computational Technologies of NEFU Institute of Mathematics and Informatics headed by Professor Vasily Vasiliev and Petr Vabishchevich. The work of scientists has received "megagrant" of the Russian Government. Within the frameworks of the project in 2017, the University will open the international research laboratory "Multiscale mathematical modeling and computer calculations" which will lead fundamental research and applied developments.

Staff of NEFU Research-Educational Center "Nanotechnologies" led by Professor Aytalina Okhlopkova developed scientific principles of polymer composites with adaptive to the service conditions properties, which based on the materials of new generation for use in extreme conditions, including new innovative technology for the processing of polymeric nanocomposites.

A group of scientists of the Federal University and Germany led by Professor Lyudmila Pestryakova held paleolimnological and paleobotanical study of lake groups of Chukotka Autonomous Okrug and Yakutia. Paleolimnologists surveyed and drilled 22 lakes, collected data on the current state of enclosed water bodies of Chukotka on hydrochemistry, hydrobiology, morphometric parameters, and drilled boring crowns at all lakes.

According to NEFU Research Management, in recent years the number of publications and research areas has increased. Over the last 5 years, the average growth rate of publications in Scopus is 51.52%, in the Web of Science average growth rate of publication is 95%. In previous years, the main areas of articles in the database Web of Science and Scopus were mathematics, biology, ecology. Last year the number of publications in the social sciences, pedagogy, and linguistics had increased.

Every year the number of students is growing, engaged in scientific activities. Each NEFU student can find niche in one of the 312 student science clubs, in which 5250 children participate. At the end of 2016, 11 students have won scholarships of the President and the Government for high achievements in scientific research.

Noting the main achievements of the University in 2016, its worthy positions in the national and international rankings, we have reason to believe that NEFU staff will keep up the pace of development and achieve the best results in all areas.

I wish breakthrough productive ideas of talented researchers, enthusiasts, were implemented into real developments and innovation projects. We always support talented, initiative students and young scientists with a modern way of thinking.

I warmly congratulate you, dear friends, and wish you all to prove yourself! All the best to you and your loved ones!
