Thousands of living cells are needed to clone a mammoth
Channel One of the federal television prepared the holiday programme dedicated to the celebration of the Republic Day: about studies of the ancient animals, conducted by researchers of the Research Institute of the North Applied Ecology.
Semyon Grigoriev, the leading scientific employee of the Institute of the North Applied Ecology of the Laboratory of the Mammoth Museum named after P.A. Lazarev, told how they study cells of fossil animals. "Their skin and fat samples were well preserved in the Yakut permafrost. Scientists of the university study the collected material. Now we are looking for mammoth living cells, usually such discoveries are destroyed and not suitable for further research, but due to the permafrost they preserved well. The problem is that thousands of living cells are needed for cloning", he said.
