NEFU Faculty of Law carries out the international research project “Challenges in Arctic Governance”

Faculty of Law of North-Eastern Federal University won a grant for the implementation of the international project “Challenges in Arctic Governance". The goal is to compare the nature of the relationship between the subjects of industrial development - indigenous peoples, industrial companies, and the state in different regions of Russia, according to the department.

According to Aytalina Ivanova, responsible for the project, Associate Professor of Theory, History of State and Law of the Faculty of Law, the scientific work is interdisciplinary - it will involve experts in jurisprudence, law and social anthropology, geography. "The program is aimed at the study of indigenous peoples in terms of industrial development of the Arctic regions, governance and participation in the system of government and non-governmental organizations. During the four years, the university researchers will study the legislation, the process of law implementation in South Yakutia, Amur region, the Trans-Baikal Territory, the international experience of Norway, Canada, Finland", said the associate professor of the Faculty of Law. She notes that the result of the work will be the improvement of legislation for the regulation of these relations.

"Researchers rely on the legal framework of federal and regional level. Yakutia takes a special place in the development of legislation, which in 2010 was the first from Russia in adoption of the law on ethnological expertise", said Ivanov Aytalina.

The program "Challenges in Arctic Governance" is funded by the Norwegian Science Foundation, the head of which will be Professor Gunhild Hogenson at the University of Tromso. The University of Tromsø, Lapland, Northern British Columbia, the Lithuanian Vilnius University, Institute of Humanitarian Research and Indigenous Peoples of the North SB RAS participate in the research, including post-graduate students of the universities.

"The grant gives an opportunity to conduct joint research on an international level, to share experiences, using different methods of research, raises the international ranking of North-Eastern Federal University. The international contacts of the university expand due to participation in the program", said Associate Professor Aytalina Ivanova.
